Brecon is the main market town in the south of the county of Powys and still maintains many traditional facilities associated with a rural area. Brecon has a popular theatre, and cathedral and hosts a world renowned jazz festival in early August. The Green Man festival takes place on the third weekend of August just outside Brecon in the Glanusk Estate. A Farmers Market gathers in the Market Hall each second Saturday of the month.

Fans of the film Zulu may wish to visit The Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh or if you simply wish to take a day out and watch a movie then there is a 2 screen cinema which shows the latest movies. The Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery can be found in the y Gaer building. Brecon library is also situated here.

Brecon is also a terminus for the Brecon & Monmouthshire canal which runs for 35 miles from Brecon via Crickhowell to Pontymoile and onto Cwmbran. Boat hire and guided tours from Dragonfly Cruises are available from the Brecon Canal basin outside the Theatr Brycheiniog.
